Do you have dry or chapped lips? There are many reasons behind this problem that usually appear due to cold weather or sun exposure.

"Split lips or cheilitis are caused by loss of hydration of the natural oils and lipids of the outer layer of the lip, which generates dryness and cracks," said Buzzfeed, Dr. Diane Madfes, a certified dermatologist and member of the American Academy of Dermatology in New York.

According to some specialists, it is normal for the lips to split, but when the cracks are deep and there is inflammation, infections, fungi and painful sores can occur, then prevention is ideal for having beautiful but mostly healthy lips.

The Huffington Post portal shares very useful tips to avoid dry lips:

  • Drink lots of water, this way you will thoroughly hydrate your skin, including lips.
  • Protect yourself against bad weather: make sure you always take care of your lips by applying a lip balm with SPF. Avoid those with odors or flavors, the more neutral the better.
  • Try to use lip balm regularly: do not wait until you have chapped lips, recovery will take longer.
  • Try not to lick your lips or remove your skin with your fingers.
